In a constantly developing sector, companies need to adapt themselves to changes and, as far as possible, anticipate said changes. Consequently, innovation must no longer be considered as something purely spontaneous, but rather as a mechanism inherent to company processes and a basic driving force to maintain market leadership.

Since 1999, the year in which the R+D Department was set up, results of great practical interest have been obtained for the company, which have enabled the consolidation of the Department as a basic tool to strengthen our knowledge and technologies and to fully meet the needs of our clients, and in fine, to achieve sustainable management.

CESPA has been a pioneer in the use of renewable energies. The first experience CESPA had in the use of Liquefied Natural Gas to drive its fleet of vehicles, and one which was a first in Spain, was co-ordinated by the R+D Department. Furthermore, with respect to the use of the biogas energy generated in controlled deposits, we might mention the improvements obtained in the biogas cleaning systems and the installation of the microturbine that works off biogas from the CESPA controlled deposit, the first in Spain to do so.

In the field of information management, the implementation in CESPA of the transmission of date and of information on position by mobile telephone deserves special mention.

The CLONIC project, one in which we collaborated with the University of Girona, investigated the treatment of lixiviate by means of a fully innovative biological process system called SHARON-ANAMNOX. Ours is one of the few projects in Europe that focused on this application.

Neither should we overlook the efforts made by CESPA in the gardening area, which have been translated into projects aimed at the application of integrated pest control methods and at the use of regenerated waste water in gardening.

The continuous collaboration that is encouraged between our R+D Department and our clients has served to benefit both parties by means of the gaining of new knowledge and on account of the public image of the activities being carried out.

The practical application of the results of the R+D projects reflects its true value. On the other hand, the obtaining of patents and the support, through financing, from state and European bodies, shows just to what extent CESPA is promoting and carrying out initiatives of great national and international interest.
