At the Urban Solid Waste Treatment Center in Alcalá del Río (Sevilla), Cespa is developing the first controlled landfill site managed as a bioreactor in Spain. This bioreactor, through the application of various technical processes, speeds up the stabilization process of waste materials deposited in the landfill. This reduces the environmental risks after the site’s closure and ensures its stability after the 30 years considered by state regulations as the period of post-closure liability.
The bioreactor involves the development of an innovative system to manage leachates at the landfill site, and the installation of an advanced system to capture, manage and recover energy from the biogas produced at the site. A comprehensive control program control allows continuous monitoring of the bioreactor.
The R&D department of the Ferrovial Servicios subsidiary is collaborating with other organizations on this project in Andalusia, as well as the University of Cantabria.
